How To Paint Your Pot In Studio

by Jayde Gibbards

Watch this tutorial to learn how to paint your pot in studio.

Here are the 6 steps to paint your pot:

1. Sponge it

Slightly dampen the sponge and give your piece a good wipe-down before painting. This will remove any dust and create a smooth, bump-free canvas for you to get creative.

2. Sketch it

Use your trusty pencil to sketch out your design (don’t worry, the pencil marks will vanish once we work our magic in the kiln). For our extra-bold creative butterflies, feel free to skip this step and freehand your design.

3. Paint It

Grab those underglaze colours and paint away. You can do one coat for a lovely watercolour effect or two for a bold, solid finish (we suggest two coats for best results). And don’t worry, underglaze dries differently to paint, your colours will look shiny and vibrant after the firing process.

4. Sign it

Using a black underglaze pencil from the shelf, write your name on the bottom so we know it’s yours (we call it a maker's mark).

5. Clean up

Before you go, don’t forget to wash all your tools at the sink and place everything back on the shelf. Pop your leftover underglaze in the designated bin and we’ll reuse it.

6. Fire it

Fill out your firing card, and place it with your pot on the firing shelf. We’ll then apply a coat of clear glaze to give it that finished look and fire your piece. We’ll shoot you a text within 1-2 weeks when it’s ready to be collected.
